The Weinstein Company Circles U.S. Rights to ‘Spivet’

The Weinstein Company is in advanced negotiations to acquire all U.S. rights to Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s 3D adventure pic “The Young and Prodigious Spivet,” in what will be one of the highest-profile deals inked at Cannes.

Adapted from Reif Larsen’s novel by Jeunet and his scribe partner Guillaume Laurant (“Amelie”), the English-language “Spivet” centers on a 12-year-old boy (Kyle Catlett) with extraordinary skills who leaves his family in Montana and takes off on a cross-country adventure to the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. to receive a prize.

WARNER BROS. PICTURES SLATES SPIKE JONZE’S “HER” FOR NOVEMBER 20, 2013

“Her,” the new modern-day love story from Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Spike Jonze (“Being John Malkovich”) and Annapurna Pictures, will open in limited release on November 20, 2013, it was announced today by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

The film will be released initially in New York, Los Angeles and Toronto, with future cities and dates to be announced.

Steven Spielberg Is Making a Halo TV Show

Steven Spielberg will executive produce a live-action TV series based on the video-game franchise Halo, he announced today at an Xbox event. The show, World of Halo, is for Xbox Live — which means Microsoft is getting into the original programming game, too. On the one hand, hey, anyone would kill to get Steven Spielberg onboard with a project! On the other hand, his most recent shows are the nonentity Falling Skies and the short-lived Smash, The River, and Terra Nova.

Antonio Banderas Starring In Chilean Miners’ Tale ‘The 33′

Antonio Banderas will star in “The 33,” based on the true story of the 33 Chilean miners who were rescued after being trapped for 69 days in 2010.

Producer Mike Medavoy made the announcement Sunday at Cannes, where Good Universe is handling international sales. Production is scheduled to begin in the fall in Chile with Ed McGurn also producing.

Martin Sheen and Rodrigo Santoro are on board as part of the ensemble. Patricia Riggen (“La Misma Luna”) was attached to direct last fall.
