Box Office: Fourth 'Underworld' film is No. 1 on strong weekend [Updated]

It continues to be a strong month at the box office, with the fourth installment of Sony Pictures' "Underworld" series debuting to healthy ticket sales over the weekend.

The vampire film starring Kate Beckinsale, "Underworld: Awakening," opened to $25.4 million, according to an estimate from the studio's Screen Gems label. Meanwhile, the George Lucas-produced "Red Tails" — about the Tuskegee Airmen — exceeded industry expectations, selling $19.1 million worth of tickets.

Methinks a certain A-list action hero is getting a little too Method. In February’s Men’s Journal, Mark Wahlberg noted that he was booked on one of the flights that was hijacked on 9/11. Though his flight was rescheduled, the Contraband star insisted, “If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have went down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying, ‘Okay, we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.’” Wait, what?

'Contraband' takes weekend box office with $28.8M

(AP) LOS ANGELES — The Mark Wahlberg smuggling drama "Contraband" stole the top spot at box office away from the 3-D rerelease of "Beauty and the Beast" and the musical comedy "Joyful Noise" with a $28.8 million debut haul, while "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol" earned $14.2 million in its fifth weekend to take third place.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com are:

Mark Wahlberg had the biggest opening of his career as an action star this weekend, as his crime thriller "Contraband" was the No. 1 pick at the box office.

The film about the ugly world of drug smuggling was the most popular movie over the four-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend, grossing a solid $28.8 million domestically, according to an estimate from distributor Universal Pictures.
