Sacha Baron Cohen Banned From Oscars

The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has pulled actor Sacha Baron Cohen‘s tickets from the 84th Academy Awards. This means he is banned from attending the Oscars even though he is one of the stars from Hugo, Paramount’s 11 nominated Best Picture contenders. “Unless they’re assured that nothing entertaining is going to happen on the Red Carpet, the Academy is not admitting Sacha Baron Cohen to the show,” an insider just told me.

Edgar Wright to Direct Johnny Depp in The Night Stalker

He's got Dark Shadows coming out this summer, but Johnny Depp already has plans to adapt another supernatural TV drama for the big screen. Deadline reports that Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) has signed on to direct Depp in a feature transfer of The Night Stalker, a seventies TV show starring Darren McGavin as a crime reporter investigating things that go bump in the night. (It was also remade as a TV show in 2005, though it only lasted six episodes.) Do you think Wright and Depp bonded over their similar hairstyles?

Will Sacha Baron Cohen’s ‘The Dictator’ Character Walk The Oscar Red Carpet?

The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences is concerned that, on Sunday, Sacha Baron Cohen will come to the Oscars and walk the Red Carpet. While ordinarily that would be fine since he’s a big international star, the Academy is dismayed that he’ll come dressed as the title character in his upcoming Paramount comedy The Dictator. That proposal has been floated with the Academy, and I’m told that everyone involved in the ceremony is adamantly against it on the grounds that it makes a mockery of what Hollywood considers its most prestigious event.

A deal was made with Arash Amel to write the script. The film is not being called a prequel, which had been rumored for the past few years.

Gael Garcia Bernal Is Your New Zorro

Last April, rumours began to spread that 20th Century Fox had its eye on an ambitious new take on the Zorro legend, with post-apocalyptic version Zorro Reborn bubbling away in development. Now it’s closer to reality, with Gael Garcia Bernal anointed to take over the trademark sword-swishing duties.

Since it’s set in The World Of Tomorrow, it’ll be a change from the usual Californian / Mexican setting, though the ruined world concept does suggest a lot of desert will still be involved. Bernal’s Zorro will this time be a masked vigilante out for revenge.

Until now...
